Gillian Orrell is someone who makes aspiring writers everywhere envious. She's a natural. Within the first paragraph I was laughing out loud on the tube - not something to be done lightly. --NZInspired magazine

Product Description

After nearly a decade of city living, thirty-something Gillian Orrell left a high-flying city career, travelled to New Zealand and took up the local past-time with the peculiar name. 'Tramping', she discovered, is a lot like hiking, but with some distinctive local twists. But uncertainty and inexperience soon gave way to the challenge of the walks themselves as she embarked on the greatest adventure of her life. Fighting snowstorms, blisters and the attentions of unwanted tramping companions, she walked in awe through the natural splendour of New Zealand's great outdoors, trekking over mountains, through rivers, along beaches, past glaciers, into craters, around lakes, beside active volcanoes and through some of the oldest forests in the world. Along the way, she searched for endangered species, uncovered local legends, got caught in a flood, hunted goats, marvelled at the earth's antics, met the real trampers and learned what a JAFA is. The experience caused Gillian to reconsider her place in this world, reconstruct her life and re-examine her principles. "New Boots in New Zealand" is a day-by-day account of all nine Great Walks, from the majesty of the famous Milford Track to the unexpected variety of the Heaphy and the beguiling mystery of the Whanganui River Journey. Full of humour and joie de vivre, it is a hugely enjoyable and inspirational armchair read as well as an essential source of information for anyone intending to walk in New Zealand.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring!, 15 Dec 2006
By Miss P (Newcastle, UK) - See all my reviews
An excellent record of a very independent journey through some of the most exciting and varied landscapes that New Zealand has to offer. Written in a straight-forward, very readable style - full of humour, but also packed with facts about New Zealand's history, ecology and culture. I found it hard to put down. An inspiring story which makes you want to just get out there and live life! Great photos too.

Excellent, funny and impossible to put down. You'll want to do the Great Walks after reading this, though maybe not in such close succession as the author! Wonderful advert for the glories of New Zealand as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read. , 2 Jul 2008
Let me start by saying that this is a great book. The narrative is very readable and enjoyable. The author is likable and her descriptions help put you right in the moment with her.

At times the narrative moves a bit quickly and you feel like she has only brushed the surface of her moments in nature, but the overall journey for the reader is a pleasant one.

On a different note, I find her militant opinions on hikers who collect abandoned snail shells as souvenirs, and her laughable worries on relieving oneself in the woods, a bit ludicrous for a woman who gleefully joins ruffian goat hunters in the scene of their graphic jet-boat hunting party.

Still the information on the beliefs and personalities of the locals, as well as some detailed information on the New Zealand Dept. of Conservation, is enlightening and helpful.

Better than many other books about New Zealand, read this book for some fun introduction and inspiration, but then cast her journey aside and go live one of your own!
