In this fully revised and updated third edition of her book A Career in your Suitcase, Jo reveals in an easy readable style the secrets on how you too (the expat accompanying partner) can have a career you love, and earn money from it.

Drawn on her own experiences of over two decades, she depicts the scene of the expat rollercoaster and the challenges it poses for pursuing a dual career. The answer is a portable career; one that can be packed up and unfolded, as well as built upon, in a next location.

Jo believes a portable career is possible for anyone. In her book she guides you with her team of experts in a step-by-step approach in finding the perfect, portable career that meets your values, aspirations and lifestyle.

"A portable career requires constant introspection and reinvention," she says. "Becoming too attached to what you've already `been' and already `seen' might be the biggest obstacle to your international career success."

She therefore stresses the importance of managing your expectations appropriately and to anticipate challenges and even temporary setbacks. "The better you prepare beforehand," she says, "the more easily you'll make the move into your new environment." It is all about thinking outside of the box, and recognizing the opportunities being offered.

Examples of professions that qualify as portable are teaching, coaching, network marketing, online trading, counseling, hairdressing and writing. But with a little creative thinking the list can easily be extended to '60 Brilliant (freelance) Ideas,' ranging from starting your own recruitment agency, painting individual greeting cards and running a crèche or playgroup close to shops, to making and selling chutneys and jams from local ingredients.

Much of her own success at creating a globally mobile career she puts down to her ability "to network easily, cheaply and effectively." She emphasizes how networking is not about handing out business cards, but about building relationships and making friends. This book is no exception, as it has been co-authored by experts as an extension of her knowledge in the field.

Perhaps the only slight drawback is the consequent, occasional clash of writing styles, and the fact that some parts (especially the chapters "Coping with Change" and "Talking to a Professional") seem to stand too much on themselves, lacking sufficient coherence with the rest.

All in all, though, this is a valuable handbook for all career-minded expat spouses, seeking to refocus their own professional path.
