Book Description

Haghuf, respected elder among the unseen goblins, has only scorn for humans. Yet he is drawn into friendship with a human aristocrat by the Dance, the celebration of life that holds the goblin society together in a world where nature has moved to cleanse itself of the ravages of human exploitation.

Count Anton - human, magician, shapeshifter – rules the human world above despite the conflict between the religious ideals of the common people and his own close society of magicians who live quietly among them. Anton wanders freely within the underground world of the goblins, gathering information on their society under the assumed protection of his friendship with Haghuf.

When an unwitting human wanders accidentally into the caverns, a series of events is set into motion that will lead fanatical humans into an invasion of the underground goblin world. Count Anton’s friendship with Haghuf leads him to betray his loyalty to his own people to avoid a war that the humans cannot possibly win. It is his fascination for Talla, a goblin succubus, that may tip the delicate balance between the human and goblin worlds.

Hunted by humans who feel he has betrayed them by his friendship with the goblins, and unwelcome in the goblin world where all humans are considered the enemy, he will be thrown into a deeper world, where even the goblins have reason to be afraid…

1.0 out of 5 stars Confused and Naive, 31 May 2008
By Mr. J. L. Silk (Berks United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Dance of the Goblins (Paperback)
This is a truly bizarre novel, although I must admit from the outset that I did not finish the book (finished about 2/3rds).

The prose was at times rambling, at times just plain poor.

The concepts of the story are naive and whimsical, building an idea of utopia that even in a fantasy setting seems too far fetched to be even remotely likely. The plot was a normal fantasy fodder reminiscent of books from the early 50's and 60's. And overall the book came across as a 1960's hippy metaphor of happy utopian anarchists against those that wish to impose order and laws and take us into wars. It certainly has a 'vietnam era' feel to the whole thing.

But overall it would not tax a 5-year old to read this, or see the huge holes in the plot and writing. Very simplistic and almost instantly forgetable.

1.0 out of 5 stars My high hopes were dashed, 7 Nov 2007
By R. Rauchenberg "book maven" (Nuneaton UK) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Dance of the Goblins (Paperback)
I was relishing reading this supposedly epic tale of Count Anton's struggle to forge a union between the human and goblin races. However upon reading the book I was deeply disappointed. I was expecting a dark yet mercurial fantasy blockbuster in the style of the "Realm of the Princes of Fingercraft" by the legendary Davron S Glassfoot. Unfortunately it was more of a rambling chore to read, reminiscent of the worst of the books of the "Silver Soulweaver" series. Worst of all it was full of factual inaccuracies, I mean are we really to believe that Redstone Goblins are somehow distant relatives of Black Elves. Having said that I will still award it one star as it would be a good introductory read to the Future Fantasy genre for Newbies or children.

5.0 out of 5 stars I liked it!, 12 Nov 2007
By NT Waters (Sweden) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Dance of the Goblins (Paperback)
I have never been moved to write a review for a book before. However, I felt that I wanted to after reading another review on Amazon that talked about this book having factual inaccuracies and being difficult to read. How can you have factual inaccuracies in a book about Goblins that is a fantasy book? Perhaps the reviewer was truly away with the fairies.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading this book and thought it original and different to other fantasy novels. I picked it up and hardly put it down until I finished it. A pleasanter read, I haven't had for ages. Fresh would be a good word to describe it. I didn't have to fight to suspend my disbelief could feel empathy with the characters. The story had different levels that made me think and wasn't predictable. It also didn't follow the cliches that some fantasy books can get bogged down with. I passed it on to a friend. She read it avidly and said it was so good that it should be made into a film. I agree. This book created vivid images that I can still see. If there isn't to be a follow-up soon, I shall just have read it again!
