It's a realistic yet humorous look at their interactions (Anna tickles Ben, Ben tells Anna there's a man-eating monster in her room etc.) with bright and cheerful illustrations that remind me of the colourful clarity of Emma Chichester Clark (and the excellent Blue Kangaroo series). My boys (3&6) love the wardrobe being a monster, their sister inside and requiring rescuing, and Ben's adventures in the garden with a stick fending off wolves and bears while Anna tends the hilarious guinea pigs. The ending is both heart-warming and lyrical: when Night presses her soot black face against the window and the heating creaks like the sound of a thousand biting beetles, Ben crawls into Anna's bed.... and it's wonderful to have a big sister.
