Product Description

Product Description

Twelve-year old twins, Mika and Ellie, live in a future behind a wall - safe from the plague animals beyond.   Or so they've been told.   But when one of them disappears, and the other takes part in a sinister virtual reality game, they begin to discover their concrete world is built on lies.   Determined to find each other again, they go in search of the truth. And as a strange sound in their heads grows to a roar, they find out that children and the planet have never mattered more.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic debut, 16 Sep 2008
This book was a wonderful find. I'm always on the look out for new children's science fiction but I was initially put off by the cover to this one, looking a bit tacky I thought.
Throughout the book the author is incredibly inventive, creating a future uk by subtly warping and distorting familiar products or ideas. The plot is fast paced and - vitally - believable.
For a more adult read look to Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood - I wonder if this author had read this book too.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great idea for a story, 14 Sep 2008

I have to say that I agree with all the reviewers, including (to some extent) the chap who gave this only 1 star. The plot is great! Evil scientists, the idle rich, the down-trodden heroes struggling for justice and a better life. On this level, I loved the book, and have recommended it to a number of my young students who love science fiction and fantasy. It is fair to say that this is not great fiction, and I agree that on an adult level it is easy to find fault with the characterisation and aspects of the writing style. However, this is popular fiction - and I would rather children and young adults read books that interested and excited them than earnest and worthy books that send them to sleep. It's a good story, and if you like fantasy and Sci-fi I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy this book.
