3.0 out of 5 stars Nothing wrong with the story, but not exactly good value, 6 Sep 2007
By A. Mcdonald (South-East UK, Europe) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a short story, set in Scotland after global conditions change greatly. To a large extent, it's another of those "Survivor" scenarios, where folk have to cope with huge changes to climate/technology/whatever. The story itself is interesting, the characters plausible, and MacLeod's possible future is, in my opinion, possible, and is also consistent within itself. Where this slim volume falls down most is in value for money. The story is spread over 77 pages, yet the book costs only a pound less than a full-sized MacLeod novel with five times the page count. You can easiy read it in an afternoon. Without giving away the plot at all, the ending seems to lack the obvious retribution that should occur. I hope that the "Happy ever after" hollywood plot endings are not going to occur in MacLeod's work from now on.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written but short, 27 Oct 2006
You should be aware that this book is 70 smallish pages of largish type. I finished it in well under an hour. The book is one of a series designed for people who are not used to reading a full length novel or who simply want a quick read.

The story is set in a near future Scotland in the course of a non-nuclear war with China, started by accident. The viewpoint character is a drafted road worker, a "lagger", one of the "Highway Men" of the title, who is attracted to a woman from a small community living outside the law. Anything more I said would give away the plot, such as it is.

It is, of course, well and interestingly written - Ken MacLeod is a craftsman. However, for anyone other than the target audience, I doubt the book is worth the cost.
