5.0 out of 5 stars Publish and be praised, 15 April 2006
By Wynkyn de Worde (Rickmansworth, UK) - See all my reviews
'What do I have to do to get a book published!', ISBN 1-905203-58-6, by Jo Anthony. Pen Press, London, 2005, fills an important gap in the UK market. While there are numerous American titles that address the subject, most British ones are somewhat dated and fail to deal with the opportunities (and potential pitfalls) that modern digital technologies provide.
This book gives up-to-date information that will be of great value to anyone who is planning or has already embarked on the journey to become a self-published author. The book also contains a number of informative anecdotes from authors who have successfully achieved self-published status. Anthony writes the three reasons why an author would choose to self-publish are because they:
• can afford to do so;
• have something unique to offer;
• have self-belief and energy for the task.
When discussing the importance of presentation the author is correct when she write: 'The criticism of most self-published works is that they... with the occasional typographic error, misplaced punctuation, inconsistencies in style...'. Therefore, it is a pity that her own book fails to achieve the high standards that she sets. All too frequently her text and format demonstrate many of the design shortcomings that self-published material is prone too.
However, non-fiction books are often bought on the basis of the quality of the information that they contain rather than on how successfully they conform to the publishing norms of the day. 'What do I have to do to get a book published!' is one such book where the usefulness of its information far out weighs the shortcomings in presentation.
Highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Some very good advice., 22 Jun 2006
By Ms. A. Rhodes "missjrhodes" (Edinburgh) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
... hidden amongst all those typos is some good advice, for example that you must make your book look as good as any other or it will fail in the market. A lot of the book is about agents and royalty publishers and vanity publishers (most of this info appears to have been downloaded from their websites - why am I paying to see web content?) The section on how to publish your book is very short (about 30 pages) but full of excellent advice about how important the appearance of your book is to compete with professionals it must look professional.

The typesetting of the book is so poor that there are 14 blank pages at the end of the book - how amateurish!
