Product Description

Product Description

"Character is Destiny" explores the pains of growing up and loss, the nature of faith, and the horror and pity of war. Set between 1899 and 1988 against backdrops as diverse as Constantinople, Beirut and Brighton, it recounts the turbulent life of Dick Cooper, the author's father. Dick is both hero and anti-hero: rebellious, sensitive, naive, feisty, and compassionate with a real sympathy for others. We are introduced to Lucy, Dick's beautiful Moroccan nursemaid, who becomes a substitute mother figure and guardian angel; Arthur, his increasingly callous and embittered father; Maresca, the unscrupulous Legionnaire; the prostitute Laure, whom he takes to the opera instead of to bed; and the shy but witty Doris, who becomes his wife.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Book, 11 April 2006
Every once in a while you come across a book that has much to recommend it and this is such a book.

It is a good read throughout and gets going straightaway. As Dick Cooper's life moved through various stages, I found myself wondering whether character and thereby ones destiny is determined most by nature or nurture.

Having the factual events of her father's life to write about clearly make for interesting material but one gets the feeling that the author is a natural story teller. I too hope she has a work of fiction waiting to be written as her style kept me turning the pages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably one of the best books I have read, 25 Jan 2006
Character is Destiny is one of those books that once you start reading you find hard to put down. Although based on fact it is as exciting as any fiction book I have read. I would have loved to have met Dick Cooper when he was alive.
Pat, you are so lucky to have had such a character for your Father and please write more books

5.0 out of 5 stars Character is Destiny, 8 Nov 2005
This was the first book I've actually read in a long time and from the outset I found it very gripping. It was fasinating to read about the authors father's life and travels with very much interest. Absolutely fantastic read.
