5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling series, 24 Jul 2006
The arrival of a new mystery series is always something to celebrate and with the arrival of Belinda Lawrence the English village murder mystery is secure. The Embroidered Corpse follows on from Capable of Murder, which introduced the young Australian, Belinda who inherits a cottage near Bath. Tightly written, the second in the series expands Belinda's relationship with her neighbours and carries them into a mystery surrounding a piece of tapestry that is found in an old country house. It seems the tapestry is more than just an ornament and when the murders begin, Belinda and her friend, Hazel sink deeper into the mystery. A group of young monks, a religious couple and a college professor are all interested in the tapestry and lead to an exciting and thrilling climax.
History plays an important part in the story and is cleverly woven into the contemporary events. Recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars " a new type of mystery", 5 Sep 2006
Buying antiques has its dangerous moments as Belinda and Hazel learn after a trip to buy some furniture from the estate of a man who was recently murdered. They soon receive a visit from a mysterious couple and Hazel's antique shop is broken into. The question is what were the thieves looking for and why did they scratch up a fine table in the store? Is this related to a piece of old tapestry Belinda found in a drawer? How did the thieves know the women had it? Is there a connection between the strange couple and the thieves?
What relationship does the death of the vicar have to the tapestry and a religious group founded by the mysterious couple? Why do the members of the group look like thugs instead of people who have found religion? And why does Belinda keep seeing them wherever she goes?
These questions, a kidnapping, more deaths, and deceit all follow the trail of the origin of the piece of tapestry and its significance. It ultimately leads to a church that existed at the time of William the Conqueror as shown by the tapestry.
A story with lots of action and mysterious happenings to keep you reading and guessing. Join Belinda as she decides to visit the religious community and meet its members. Just how religious are they?
Talented author Brian Kavanagh uses history to fashion a new type of mystery, combining clues from the days of the Norman invasion to murders in our own time. Join Belinda as she tries to figure out how it all connects.
I'm pleased to recommend this fresh look at one of the oldest motives for murder to any mystery or fiction fan. A tale worth the time to read. Enjoy. I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive, 26 Jun 2006
The Embroidered Corpse by Brian Kavanagh. The adventures of Australian Belinda Lawrence continue with the second book in Brian Kavanagh's compelling mystery series.
Belinda now has a close relationship with Mark Sallinger, the handsome realtor she met in Capable of Murder. And she's entered a business partnership with Hazel Whitby, a still handsome middle-aged woman with lusty appetites. Hazel and Belinda travel across England in pursuit of rare antiques. Her share of the antique business profits coupled with funds from tour groups visiting her home and gardens has made Belinda comfortable, financially. And with Mark to share her life, she's more than content.
While on one of their antique-searching trips, the two women stumble on a square of tapestry portraying a king seated on his throne. The material appears quite old. The owner's uncertain as to the age of the tapestry but it's supposed to be William the Conqueror. Hazel dismisses the tapestry as Victorian until the owner's killed. Belinda has a hunch the square may be part of the Bayeaux tapestries created to commemorate William's defeat of the English.
Belinda investigates and finds a religious sect loyal to King Harold whose throne William took at the Battle of Hastings. Putting her life in danger, she searches for the truth as more people are murdered. This is another absorbing mystery well worth the reader's time whether he is an anglophile or simply loves a good read. Let's hope the next book is released soon. Kavanagh's books are addictive. Once you start this mystery series, you want to keep reading. Review- Nancy Madison (Clues to Love, Never Love a Stranger, What the World Needs Now)
