Product Description

Synopsis

Her life as she knows it in Scotland is over. Ornithologist Luisa Ross embarks on an odyssey to Spain where, during the course of a lonely fieldwork assignment in the mountains of Mallorca, she discovers an extraordinary and mysterious world. The people who inhabit it - the enigmatic Anita Berens, the Ferrer family, the journalist Colin Cramer, her nature conservancy colleagues, Julio and Felipe, and the shaman Rafael Vargas - challenge her preconceptions at every turn. Isolated on the mountain she gets on with her field study and struggles to avoid the distractions of the nearby town. But there is no escape, and soon she finds herself confronting the severest challenge of her life so far. Comments about the author's work: The lyrical, lucid text takes the reader on a wonderfully vivid journey ...The Herald ...she spins a web of words ...The Scotsman I would recommend it to anyone searching for the inherent magic and poetry that makes Mallorca such a special place. The Reader Sian Mackay lived for several years in Egypt and North America before returning to her native Scotland to bring up her son and daughter and work as a journalist. She founded Moubray House Press in Edinburgh's Royal Mile and later wrote several non-fiction books (as Sheila Mackay) including Lindisfarne Landscapes, Mountain Music: Mallorca, The Forth Bridge and Early Scottish Gardens: A Writer's Odyssey. By 1992 Spain had become her 'home from home', and Mallorca was the seedbed for a further literary transition, where the grandeur of the Sierra de Tramuntana and its mountain towns inspired Rafael's Wings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging Spirit, 27 Aug 2006
By Montague S. Burgess - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In "Rafael's Wings", Sian Mackay treats us with a tapestry of words. The passages of poetic prose, opening in the grand spires of the old Barcelona church, perform throughout the book epiphanies of the sacrededness of life, human and avian. As such it is a novel you have to savour again and again to experience the joy of how the high creatures: woman, man, bird-man and bird engage to approximate the gods, high and low, old and present. Its principally Mallorcan focus expands to planetary dimensions, reminding us all.

M. Stephen Burgess

5.0 out of 5 stars But what's it about?, 17 Jun 2008
By S. Riches - See all my reviews

The 3 reviews here so far tell me nothing, they are just arty-farty tripe. Can someone PLEASE explain in plain language what it is about, then I may consider purchasing!
In order to post this I've had to give a rating so I've been kind and put 5.
Thank you. Steve Riches.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magic and wise tale, 20 Sep 2006
By Christine Luise Valentiner (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a magic and wise tale. A spiritual, real, raw and hidden Mallorca, far from the crowds of tourists. A superb balance between the frailty of the human soul and the strength (and beauty) of nature itself. I urge anyone who plans to visit the island to read this wee gem.
