Product Description

Product Description

When is love wrong? When it's a secret? When it's a lie? When it's illegal? What if the one person you wanted was the one you could never have? Would that stop you? A past that can never be forgiven. A passion that cannot be denied. A love that will destroy everything...Tracey Sinclair is a Newcastle-born writer currently based in London. She has written non-fiction for a number of publications and websites and her short stories have been published in magazines as diverse as "Pulp Net", "Printer's Devil" and "Woman's Weekly", although her mother is only allowed to read the latter. She has also had work included in two anthologies ("Northern Arc" and "The Blue Room") and performed on local radio. "Doll" is her first novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doll by Tracey Sinclair, 20 Aug 2005
Imiginative, innovative, immediate. This book deals with subjects often avoided or swept under the carpet in real life. It addresses them head on, takes no prisoners and forces the reader to travel to places and situations that would normally count as no-go areas emotionally. The result is one of discovery and complexity and a feeling of having experienced some of the more difficult and demanding areas of human experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning debut, 30 Aug 2005
In a world where young novelists rely upon stylistic and typographic trickery to make their mark (stand up David Eggers) Tracey Sinclair's first novel rejects these in favour of unsettling honesty, clarity and precision.
Written with a lack of sentimentally, the novel is something of a chamber piece in the way it mines depths of emotion and motivation rather than narrative sweep. It is not just an exploration of taboo subjects but is also a study of grief. From a slow beginning it gathers momentum, rushing headlong, with the delirium of an illicit thrill, towards an ending you just know isn't going to be pretty. Thea is an anti-heroine, at once self-loathing and occasionally unsympathetic but also vulnerably, recognisably human.
This book resonates long after the shock of its content has passed. What a debut!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark, thought-provoking and intense first novel, 22 Aug 2005
It's not very often that a novel arrives on your doorstep and you've read it all that same day. With Doll, I found myself drawn into the story from page 1. Dealing with death, incestuous love, revenge, mental confusion and juxtaposing it with a dry sense of humour and wry outlook on life - you find yourself simultaneously intrigued and disturbed by the character involved. The author sets up questions and takes her time in answering - pulling the reader along - almost teasing them with hints and insights into what has made the lead character who she is. It's an uncomfortable read in places - owing to the subject matter - but Tracey Sinclair treats the topic maturely and with a dark, cynical humour. This again lends to the sensation that you shouldn't really be enjoying/watching/knowing about this - it's almost voyeuristic. Well worth reading.
