This Year's Schott Bunny, 17 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Every year, there is one Christmas book that just seems to grab the public's imagination, and run away with it. Schott's Miscellany, for example; Lynn Truss's Eats, Shoots and Leaves; or the suicide bunnies (which have got a second volume out this Yule, too, that should presumably be called the Lazarus edition) - and this year's is - or rather, are - The Questons, Retro or Classic. And they're great. The premise is simple - given a choice of two alternatives, which one would you opt for? For each question, there is a brief argument in favour of each contender. While the authors (Fiona McCade, Cath Sutton and William O'Leary) claim a social legitimacy for the idea (why bother spending weeks or months to discover if the person you've just started dating is compatible when a quick couple of questions could sort it out in moments?), this is with all three tongues firmly in cheek (euurgh). The real joy lies both in the questions themselves (Kerplunk or Buckeroo? Nigella or Delia? Starsky or Hutch? - and there'll be a few old friends falling out once the latter gets an airing) and the arguments for both sides. The Retro edition is perhaps specifically suited to those who grew up in the 60s or 70s; the Classic is for everyone. It's an inspired idea, one that works, is genuinely funny and could spawn Lord knows how many spin-offs. It's a great in-office game, conversation starter, ice-breaker, toilet book, flirt-start, journey-filler and much more besides. It may even genuinely make you think, either about the question itself or about why the question needs to be asked or why the response matters. After all, if you're filled with a vague unease because the new date prefers Kerplunk, maybe they just aren't the one ...
