Product Description
Synopsis
Gilbert Macleod comes to St Kilda as the teacher. This rites-of-passage tale cannot unfold without the influence of a population alien to the new arrival but serene in its relationship with creation. Against a background of the everyday rituals of survival, both physical and metaphysical, Gilbert is drawn into the community, until his personal conflicts seem insignificant in his new understanding of a people apart. This is the large print edition. Hugh Gunn Ross evokes a distant world of the late nineteenth century, and weaves a powerful narrative through moments of great happiness, failure, tragedy and loss. Hugh Gunn Ross was born in Inverness. His work has taken him to different parts of Scotland and he is now settled in Edinburgh. His war service in the Middle East and Italy altered his perspective of the twentieth century. He writes, "I have enjoyed travelling in other countries and to some of them have returned again and again. But it has been a unique experience to have lived in imagination for a time on St Kilda."
