Just received this book as gift. It reminds me why I don't read Time Out reviews any more. Unfortunately it's pretentious twaddle and the reviewer has even misinterpreted a couple of key films.
Better to find a Halliwells for ALL 20th Century films and another (smaller) for more recent ones. At least Halliwells include 2-3 different reviews on major films to give a broader view. Time Out doesn't believe in others' opinions.

Both the previous reviewers were reviewing the kind of book that this was not meant to be. It discusses about a 1000 or so films that merit your attention and contains dozens of fascinating essays on why they might just "change your life". One or two of the writers are more concerned about projecting their own image than those on the screen but for the most part it is full of interest and entertaining and informative reading

Yes, I agree with prevous reviewer. Not at all user friendly and very unimaginative choice of films. You're much better off with one of the eds of the Virgin film guide which have reasonably long reviews of a much wider selection of films.

Format: Paperback
the obvious format for this book would be a list of films by title, sadly they opted for an essay by genre format which makes for a good read but a useless reference guide.

also the choice of films was hugely lacking. absolutely fine if 'the godfather'. 'pulp fiction' and 'starwars' are at the top of your 'best films ever' list but otherwise i'd skip it.

...mostly kack.
