Product Description

Product Description

Judy Garland was one of the greatest performers of the 20th century, whose fame and popularity have long outlasted her early death in 1969 at the age of only 47. Forever associated with the role of Dorothy in the film "The Wizard of Oz" and the song she sang in it, "Somewhere over the Rainbow", the demands first of her ambitious mother and then the studio bosses effectively robbed her of a normal childhood whilst at the same time forcing her to maintain her 'girl next door' image and a punishing work schedule with near-starvation diets and amphetamines, resulting in a dependence on drugs and alcohol which finally ended her career and her life, when she died of a drug overdose in a flat in Chelsea. This new illustrated biography gives the full story of her treatment at the hands of the studios, and how widespread critical success and the devotion of her many fans failed to keep the demons in her soul at bay. One of the greatest female stars of all time, and the best-remembered singing star of Hollywood's Golden Era of musical film, nearly 40 years after her death her recordings are still available and any fragments of memorabilia are instantly collectable, proving her enduring appeal. This thorough and fascinating account of this troubled, tragic, but nonetheless supremely talented entertainer will be required reading for her continuing legion of fans, many of whom were not even born when she died.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another documentation of Garland as a tragic icon, 26 Dec 2007
By Paul Walsh (Middlesbrough, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When seeing that a new Judy Garland book had been published I was egar to see what angle of the complex Garland psyhce the author would explore and what new images would be published.

The breif review I read in Empire Magazine stated that the book was yet another documentation of Garland as a tragic icon. It is exactly that.

For many people looking for their first book on Garland I would not recomend this. Donnelley has clearly chosen to explore and in some parts emphasize this womans private missaries rather than her personal and professional thriumphs. As a Garland fan I would suggest John Fricke's Worlds Greastest Entertainer, this is an image filled book packed full of information about Garland's carrer whilst not ignoring her personal issues.

Nevertheless, this book is beautifully presented, a lovely size and in hardback. It has to be said a beautiful front cover. The images inside are few and far between, they are the typical Garland images that (accoring to the back of the book) are all published on behalf of gettyimages so there is nothing you haven't seen before.

I deffinatley feel that this work gives the message 'poor tragic judy'. As many of her family, co-workers and fans understand this is the general image of Garland and in a sense part of her legend. However, it is clearly a biased view of her life. Yes she had many problems which are interesting to explore but the author appears to bring everything back to Judy being mistgreated by her mother, MGM, husbands etc etc.

As a fan its great to have another Judy book out there for people to learn more. If your looking for a first time Garland book this is not the one for you. If you are already a Garland fan then by all means have a read it does have interesting views and information not given in some other publications. At the end of the day Garland fans your collection does not need this piece of work in a hurry if you are more appriciative of Garlands work rather than her drug addiction.
