Review

Walk! Axarquia made our holiday, By A Customer (Amazon Reader Review) We used to have the usual beach style holidays but finally realised that there must be more to spending precious leisure time. We liked southern Spain anyway so tries the Axarquia, and took this book with us. The author's own love of the area shines through, and he takes you to all those wonderful places you would never find. We found the directions clear and precise, and were glad of the GPS waypoints which ensure you are not lost! We had already used some of the suthor Charles Davis walking guides to other destinations, so knew we would get a well written guidebook. We have used his book for the Alpujarras, Walk! Mallorca (both the west and the mountains volumes) and his Walk! Andorra. All inspiring, entertaining and the best we have found for these regions.

Product Description

If you are looking for something wild, but close to resort civilisation, then Walk! The Axarquia; could be for you. The Axarquia is one of the world's great places containing the Sierras Tejeda and Almijara which form the backbone of the region. Blessed with high summits, dizzying pinnacles, dramatic crags, deep ravines, dozens of springs, delightful rivers and the best coves on the Costa del Sol, this is a region with something for everyone. The only prerequisites for benefitting from all this are a desire to get off the beaten track and a set of relatively sturdy legs. Charles Davis has brought together 32 fully detailed walking routes for his 'home region' of the Axarquia ranging from moderate routes up to adventures requiring a good degree of fitness. Whichever group you find yourself in you'll find plenty of adventures to tempt you away from the 'Costa del Concrete'! All walking routes include:- - walking route summary. - ratings for Effort, Time, Distance, Ascents/Descents, Refreshments and Vertigo Risk. - fully detailed walk description including frequent timings to aid navigation and check your progress. - GPS Waypoints at every key point on every route. - full colour 40k scale map of the route licenced from CIGN. - short walk and stroll alternatives. Full GPS Track and Waypoint files for Walk! The Axarquia are included on the Personal Navigator Files CD published by Discovery Walking Guides.

5.0 out of 5 stars escape from the Costa del Sol, 5 Jan 2006
As someone who spends most weekends out on the fells I was not looking forward to our Costa Lotta holiday until I found this gem of a book. Leaving the family on the beach I had some great adventuring in the parque natural, arriving back dusty but grinning each day. Before the end of the first week Anna, eldest daughter, abandoned the beach and came to the Axarquia with me. Then it was son and eventually the whole family for the amazing Waterfall of Petrified Wood. They want to go back next year and Walk Axarquia will go with us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not the Costa del Sol, 24 Aug 2007
This is a fine book about an attractive region that is not what you would expect of the Costa del Sol. There are some fairly grim tourist resorts nearby, but the Axarquia itself is a wonderful wild place. I agree that the basic maps could be better, but the book is excellent in all other respects. Highly recommended.
