5.0 out of 5 stars Timeshifts, 18 Aug 2004
By A Customer
I picked this book up at a bookshop around the corner from the Pantheon in Rome and read it in about half a day. I had just been to see the Etruscan ruins near Vulci, so it held a particular interest for me. I admire what the author has done with the atmosphere and setting. Reading this book you shift back in time. Harriet, the heroine-in-trousers is an Edwardian lady traveler and artiste who comes to Italy in search of adventure. She gets more than she bargained for when she falls in love with the occultist Federigo del Re. Like Heathcliff, he's a gothic villain, inscrutable and despicable, yet noble. My wife and I argued about him. She found him fascinating and understood Harriet's obsession for him. I found him utterly repulsive. I guess it's the old difference of male and female psychology. Whatever you think of Federigo del Re, The Etruscan is a wonderful read

5.0 out of 5 stars the immortal spirit of the etruscans, 2 Aug 2004
By A Customer
This exciting tale of suspense and mystery takes you on a tour
of eerie Etruscan rock tombs in the little known area of Viterbo. Like Harriet the heroine, feminist photographer come to research these sites, I was fascinated by the character of Count Federigo Del Re, amateur archaeologist who introduces her to Etruscan traditions. Impossible to define this man: An occultist? an incorrigible rogue? An immortal spirit? Clues to his identity are found only in Harriet's diary. But is this document fiction or
fact? Beautifully written, with a real feeling for the rustic Italian setting. Marvellous details of the Italian countryside near Tuscany. Once I started, I couldn't put it down and stayed up half the night, reading to the very gripping end.
