Product Description

Synopsis

How to use emotional intelligence - or EQ - to get ahead in your career and work. Being intelligent is not enough to get you ahead at work anymore. You also have to be emotionally intelligent. In this savvy book, business psychologist Rob Yeung explains succinctly and accessibly the rules to behaving in an emotionally intelligent way. Far from being pure psychobabble, EQ is about finding out what makes others tick and can be highly effective. What are their hot buttons? Once you know what buttons to push, you can make people tick in ways that will help you out at work and in your career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 1 Jul 2006
A useful book for anyone who works for a living! It takes you through four hierachical stages of developing your emotional intelligence. 1 - you work on your "self-awareness" and develop some goals. 2 - you work on "self-direction" and control your emotions and achieve your goals. 3 - you pick up tips on influencing others and interacting with other people to get your way more effectively ("interpersonal savvy"). 4 - you think about managing across the whole organisation to become "organisationally savvy".

Intelligent writing broken down into easy-to-read chapters.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ! A FANTASTIC GUIDE ON USING EQ IN ALL AREAS OF LIFE !, 28 Dec 2007
In this helpful book Dr Rob Yeung (prominent business psychologist) explains the four main areas of emotional intelligence (EQ) in an easy to read and interesting fashion. These include becoming aware of the emotions you experience, what effect they can have on yourself and others, learning to control and use emotions to your advantage, using EQ to build better relationships and to handle conflict, and lastly using EQ to succeed in organisations.
All the chapters are organised in a way that you can dip into them whenever you need to (although learning about self awareness is integral to the other chapters so helpful to read this first). Each chapter includes a general overview of the area and gives you practical advice to use. For example in the self awareness section Rob takes you through some exercises to help you become more aware of different emotions and how to label them. In addition he shows you how to work out your priorities and set smart goals. Whereas in the self- direction chapter Rob shows you how to learn to control what effect your emotions have on yourself and others to help you succeed.

Personally I have found this book incredibly helpful, and have noticed some positive changes in how I manage my emotions. One area I have found especially helpful is learning to recognise how positive and negative emotions effect my thinking and behaviour, and `breaking the link' with negative emotions to stop them in their tracks before they have a chance to affect me. In addition to this, knowing how to change my emotional state on demand has allowed me to use this to my advantage and be more productive. In addition learning tips on how to build relationships and to become `organisationally savvy' has also helped in my every day work.
I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to be successful, to realise their goals, and to use emotional intelligence to harness their emotions and use them to their advantage. EQ is a fundamental skill to have and from personal experience I would encourage you to read this book - it pays off!!!!
