Product Description

Synopsis
Parallax View showcases the previously unpublished Novella 'In Transit', set in a future war-torn universe in which human expansion has come up against the implacable Kryte. Xeno-psychologist Abbott finds himself the guardian of a deadly Kryte on a mission to study it on his return to Earth. When the crash-land on the fortress planet of St Jerome, the Kryte prisoner turns the tables and takes Abbott into terrible custody. What follows is a terrifying journey across a hellish landscape towards a finale that might change the destiny of the Kryte and humanity, forever...Plus six other stories that examine the interface between human and alien - a parallax view from two of Britain s top science fiction writers. "Individually, Keith Brooke and Eric Brown purvey SF of the highest order: their stories have epic scope and a huge heart. The fusion of their talents is a sublime alchemy, a seamless pageant of humanity and wonder, eloquently expressed." James Lovegrove "These are stories given to us by writers who are immersed in humanity, and yet have the strength and the clarity of vision to see beyond our current horizon. These are mature stories, tales of love and loss, of pleasure and pain." Stephen Baxter "Brooke and Brown"s work has a real sweep to it, and if you're looking to recapture the sadly cliched sensation of a sense of wonder, this collection will not disappoint." Liz Williams

3.0 out of 5 stars A interesting and unpredictable conspiracy thriller, 12 Nov 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Parallax View (Paperback)
The Parralax View is now known as one of the better conspiracy films of the seventies. The original book by Loren Singer was translated by screenwriters David Giler & Lorenzo Semple Jr. into a chilling and pessimistic thriller starring Warren Beatty and directed by Alan J. Pakula. So it was interesting to come across the original source material.

There were many changes from translation to the film. Where the film focussed on Robert Kennedy type assasinaton, here the hero is gradually drawn into the mystery of a JFK type murder.

The main hero, a reporter, is one of the few remaining eyewitnesses to the murder. It is revealed by a paranoid collegue that he is to be next to be removed my the mysterious 'Parralax' company.

Fearing for his life, the main protaganist is forced into killing a innocent employee of the company before striking a relationship with the mans wife. He is tormented to take part in various 'amoral' actions to ensure his own survival.

It does get a over-plotted near the climax but stills sustains interest. The ending is less bleak than its film and there are hopes that the radicalism of the sixties might return to bring to justice those who exercise their power to forward their own hidden agendas. A neglected book which is worthy of future attention.
