Product Description

Synopsis
Jean Deforte has found a caterpillar. But lost his little sister. It's a difficult year. Father is dying and mother has sent him to an English school. Nobody likes Jean because he is half French. The girls are laughing. The teachers are on his back. The bullies are waiting in the hallways. Unluckily for Jean there are worse things than bullies: There are vacant black holes in the corners of his mind. There are darker things that would gladly fill them. Jean is about to discover that his school is more foreign than he could possibly imagine. Behind the stockroom door there are other classrooms. Classrooms where paper planes carry passengers, statues cry and board games cost your life, books ask you questions. There are endless dusty corridors, back ways, cellars and chimney flues, hidden rooms, and garrets and just occasionally you might find a pupil running for his life. Better join him. Jean knows his little sister is here. But is she hiding or helping? Is she alive or dead? In point of fact is Jean alive or dead? It's a question that the enigmatic Moonster might answer. But he is trying to get out, not in. Jean's quest to find her becomes a personal journey.

A journey to the door of the Seventh Silence. A rite of passage, a symbolic journey through Hades, the struggle between good and evil, the adventure of appearance and reality? There is something here of Dante, Peake, Carroll. Add a little Kafka, Philip K. Dick and Conrad and you will have guessed that this is not a book for children - unless like Jean they are very brave.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very strange, and definitely worthwhile..., 13 Jan 2006
I picked this up on a whim, having found it whilst searching for books being compared with Philip K. Dick's stuff - I have almost read him out, and needed new inspiration. I was not disappointed! As well as Dick, I felt overtones of Theordore Sturgeon and, especially as the book progresses, Harlan Ellison in his darker phases.

Another crossing theme, probably just in my brain, is the Chronicles of Narnia, which I have just re-read. If, as the Lady of the Green Kirtle said, Narnia is but a dream, "School: The Seventh Silence" is definitely one of the corresponding nightmares.

I found myself reading this book through the night, and by the time I finished, I did not know where I was. I am still not sure how I feel about the ending; I plan to read it again at a more sedate pace, to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goobleys in the attic, 13 Feb 2008
By Murray "emjayee" (West Sussex, UK) - See all my reviews

School: The Seventh Silence belongs to that Alice in Wonderland strand of fantasy where someone slips into a weird world obeying a dreamlike -- or more often nightmarish -- illogic of its own. The young hero, Jean, half-French and temporarily parentless, finds himself an outsider in a school in Scotland. His much-younger sister, Michelle, nicknamed "Papillion" (butterfly), at first annoys him with her flightiness and innocence in the face of his own increasingly dark view of an uncaring, incomprehensible existence. But when she mysteriously disappears, he starts to realise how much he needs all the joy in life she represents. The news that she has disappeared propels him into the nightmare School, whose corridors are prowled by a deadly unseen presence. Going from one strange lesson to the next in this Gormenghastian institution, Jean is helped on occasion by the tricksterish Moonster, a young man who has found a way of surviving the perils of the school by setting himself up as a messenger between the various teachers. Bizarre philosophical discussions alternate with episodes of fantasy, horror (the Goobleys in the attic), and occasional whimsy (taking a shower by swinging out into pelting rain on ropes suspended vertiginously high above the ground). The images and ideas come thick and fast. A very enjoyable read, perfect for lovers of fantasy that's a bit different from the norm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enchanting, 22 Dec 2006
By Alex Pattison (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this to be a wonderfully engrossing book - a compelling tale of a truly sympathetic hero embroiled suddenly in a gripping (and at times bewildering) struggle. Although complex and layered, with allusions to some of the big questions of moral and epistomological philosophy, the book is one which can be enjoyed by young and not-so-young alike, simply because it tells a great story. Herbertson has an astonishing eye for detail which infuses the story with an extraordinary realism which is quite captivating. There is a real tension between savouring the rich detail of the descriptions and and the urgency of the narrative. The author has also encapsulated so many familiar, yet elusive experiences and feelings; "what oft was thought, but ne'er so well express'd".

Although dark, the story benefits throughout from wonderful humour and warmth. Influences from many classics of children's literature abound, with Alice in Wonderland resonating particularly.

Buy it, read it and recommend it.
