"Great travelling companions, constantly entertaining and they know what they're talking about." Michael Palin "Quirky and amusing." Daily Telegraph"

Product Description

The vast, jungle-covered island of Borneo, the third largest in the world, has always held a fascination for Western travellers. This was where head-hunters ran wild and which, according to romantic myth, was rich in gold and diamonds. Today's attractions are of a different kind: trekking through pristine national parks; whitewater rafting on tropical rivers; and some of the very best dive sites in the world. This new addition to the acclaimed Footprint stable is up-to-date and packed with information and recommendations of where to stay and eat, places to visit and how to get around, as well as a comprehensive background section to help you understand the island's rich and diverse culture.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing!, 8 Jun 2006
By Laszlo Wagner (Hungary) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
When I first found this book, a new one claiming to cover the entire island of Borneo, I thought it would fill an important gap.

Sadly, it didn't take long to disappoint!

First, it is horribly out of date.
Even though it was published in 2006, it actually gives visa information for Indonesia as it was before February 2004, claiming no visa is required when in fact new, harsher visa requirements had been in force for over two years!

Coverage of Indonesian Borneo is merely nominal.
Even though Kalimantan covers 2/3 of the island, it gets just a few pages in this book, less than it does in other guidebooks covering all of Indonesia (Rough Guide Indonesia is best for Kalimantan). Out of the (only) four Kalimantan provinces, one (Central Kalimantan) doesn't even get a separate chapter, being dumped together with South.

So in effect, this is a book to Malaysian Borneo and Brunei, though even there, it doesn't go beyond the main tourist spots, covered in all Malaysia guides.

Don't waste your money on it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Malaysian Borneo, 30 May 2008
By Owez (London) - See all my reviews
If you want to visit Malaysian Borneo and are flying via Singapore or KL, then this book is probably useful. If you are going to Kalimantan then don't bother as the section on Singapore is bigger than the province that covers 2/3 of the island. Also, the history and introductions sound like they are simply lifted from the respective Malaysia and Indonesia guidebooks. There is little overall consistency, eg the section on Kalimantan starts with an explanation that Borneo is the third biggest island in the world. I've already read this several times by this point of the book. Minor points maybe, but if you can be bothered to publish a book on Borneo at least get the writers to write about Borneo, not Malaysia or Indonesia.

Very annoying. Hopefully the Lonely Planet book published next week will be better.

This book was perfect & covered all the areas we wanted to travel to. Came in very handy. My only gripe was the lack of maps & pictures.
