Invaluable guide to producing comic art with constant references to publishing for the web. Follows several artists through every stage of art production from rough sketching to polishing final work with photoshop. If you're into any sequential/graphic novel/comic art you need to check this out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Web comics, 4 April 2009
By N. Rossis (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In both my capacities as web developer and avid comics fan, I have been interested in finding out more about the various techniques used by comic creators.

This book consists of three easily-read parts: part one is a short introduction to web comics with a great number of interesting links. The second, and meatiest, part consists of A to Z tutorials by various artists that explain how they make a comic from scratch. Part three is a gallery of even more examples.

What makes this book so interesting is the wide selection of artists, and the detailed explanations. Instead of opting for the easy way out, i.e. finding 10 people using the same Photoshop technique and doing a book about it, the book is excellent in presenting a multitude of widely different methods used. These range from using 3D software like Poser that creates realistic images of almost photographic quality, to illustrators that have a dreamy, watercolour feel to their design, to "classic" monochromatic comics, to "infinite canvas" examples.

Thanks to my work, I was already familiar with most of the software mentioned in the book. However, the book was an eye-opener in demonstrating different uses for well-used tools that I thought I knew by heart by now. I am still amazed by how many different ways there are to get from point A to point B; everyone seems to have their own take, and the book is excellent in demonstrating these numerous techniques.

The one thing it doesn't have is the business side of it; i.e. information on how to make money from web comics. If this is what interests you, go for "How to make webcomics" by Guigar, Kelett, Kurtz and Straub which covers from invoicing to merchandise. Since I'm not planning on giving up my day job, however, this was not a problem for me.

I would also caution someone with very limited technical experience, that they may have to hone their skills a little before they can get the most out of this book.

All in all, I found "Webcomics" an invaluable addition to my library, and I would highly recommend it.
