5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny - despite the other reviews, 21 Jun 2006
By Jeremy Craddock (Cheshire, England) - See all my reviews
This is Hunter Davies at his funniest. And as the author of Father's Day (his columns from Punch in the 1970s and 80s), he's a pretty funny writer. I can sympathise with the one-star reviewer: if you're looking for advice on how to invest your money, then, no, this isn't a great read. If, however, you want to chuckle at the expense of tight-wad Davies, then you're in for a treat. The tone is very much in the mode of other famous skinflints like W. C. Fields and Jack Benny. Davies has always milked his private life for humorous anecdotes, and in this respect he is also like such writers as Bill Bryson, Dave Barry and Jeremy Clarkson. Also worth reading is Davies's The Fan, his collection of columns from the New Statesman. Well done, Pomona, for having the nous to go ahead with these publications.

1.0 out of 5 stars Money for old rope?, 23 May 2006
By W. Pearce (Morecambe) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I fail to see the point of this book. I borrowed it from my local library in the hope that it would tell me something useful about personal finance in a more digestable way than the books i've already looked at.

However, the book offers no real insight into how to save and invest. It is simply a collection of anecdotes (and not very interesting ones at that) which happen to centre around the topic of money. These are the kind of articles you might find in your local newspaper, where some middle-aged bloke with a beard reminisces about what it was like in his day, and how strange the world is now. To be fair, on the back cover it does say the book is 'wilfully short on practical advice', but what is the point of a book on money which off little practical advice beyond such suggestions as you should turn your kettle off as soon as it starts to boil in order to cut down on your electricity bill?
