Product Description

Product Description

Michael Levin's award-winning and extraordinarily beautiful photographs have a very painterly quality. In a recent feature profile, the American fine art magazine Focus declared 'Michael Levin's captivating images are soulful and evocative; he is truly one of the rising stars in photography'. Using long exposures Levin reduces the landscape to elemental shapes. Each image has a simplicity and purity capturing the essence of the landscape. Many of his photographs feature water and clouds, and show what has been described as 'the smooth skin of light', yet it is the architectural intrusions into these clean spaces that most engage him. Wooden posts, concrete barriers, weathered rocks, dilapidated jetties, even the elegant shape of French topiaries introduce elements which seem to haunt the landscape and introduce a human presence.

About the Author

Michael Levin has won a number of awards including the prestigious 'Photographer of the Year' award at the 2006/07 International Photography Awards in New York. Previous honorees include Henri Cartier-Bresson, William Klein and Larry Clark. Levin also won a further 'Photographer of the Year' Award at the 2007 Prix de la Photographie in Paris. Born in Winnipeg and presently living in Vancouver, Canada, Levin travels extensively to capture his sharply-observed black and white photographs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 26 Dec 2008
This book has been causing quite a stir in the photographic press, and it it easy to see why. Levin's photos are typically long exposure shots where the softness of the natural world are injected with a straight edged feature, often man made. The resulting tension between the elements frequently suggests a gateway between worlds. In our house books on photography are everywhere, but only I look at them, but this has proved to be an exception with the whole family enthralled by every image.

This is another well produced book from the Dewi Lewis publishing group . The pictures are reproduced to the highest quality and the images themselves have a timeless appeal , Michael Levin should be very proud of this achievement.

As a collector of photographic books I am more than happy to recommend this as a worthwhile addition to anybody's photographic library

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Images - what there are of them!
A fine, albeit rather limited selection of images in the style of the true master himself, Michael Kenna.
