Product Description

Product Description

'As I was Dying' brings together Paolo Pellegrin s remarkable and moving images of human suffering within areas of conflict, war and disaster. It includes work from Dafur, the Lebanon, Gaza, Kosovo, Rwanda and areas hit by the Tsunami. Pellegrin captures both the horror and despair, and his photographs convey the powerlessness of those who are victim to circumstances beyond their control, as they witness the destruction of their homes and the death of their loved ones. These are forceful and unforgetable images that resonate in the memory and give voice to the unbearable suffering of so many people.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterclass in monochrome imaging, 6 Dec 2008
By Brian Hamilton "brianhamilton14" (Scotland, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Paolo Pellegrin is one of the pre-eminent photographers working in monochrome in the world today. Apart from the legendary Sebastio Salgado I can't think of another image maker whose style, quality, breadth and depth of work is quite simply stunning.

Here we are presented with a beautifully produced volume, from the hardbound cover to the sumptuos presentation within.

The photographs are a selection from various war zones and trouble spots around the world, Pellegrin has been at them all, from Israel to Iraq to Afghanistan to Haiti.

He doesn't stand still to make his photographs, he moves and exposes as the subjects are moving in a contrary direction. This gives his work energy and urgency that sets your heart pumping. Perhaps the most startling example of this is the shaky image of a machete wielding rebel brandishing his weapon and glaring at camera, it is so confrontational as to be almost frightening.

There are quiter moments too, hooded women mourning the dead. As the men go away to play at soldiers, dying and killing, the women wait patiently for their return. These reflective, candid portraits speak of a deeper knowledge of the nature of conflict, the world beyond the technology of destruction.

If there is one criticism I can level at Pellegrin is that he is too good, it makes every other monochrome image you have seen in the past pale by comparison. This man is simply a lens to the worst of humanity, his pictures read like a world on the brink of collapse.

Check him out on the magnum photo agency and then invest in this. Money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant , 16 Oct 2008
By Photoeater (Scotland) - See all my reviews
These pictures are of the highest quality, the man is a genius of photography make no mistake. You will keep looking at this book in pure amazement and be in awe, how does he get these effects? if you are into photography you will marvel at this as I have and it will inspire you to bend the rules to make better photographs. If you are not into photography then it will make you ask a few moral questions about the human race.
