3.0 out of 5 stars A lively supplement for higher levels of play., 9 Oct 2004
By Nog (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
The Darklands supplement combines a good mix of playable material, and gazateer style background information. Much of the book is, understandably given the title, focused on the different regions of the darklands, and the Darklords that rule these regions. Such information is unlikely to be of much use in a low level campaign, other than as background history, as any heroes venturing into such areas at even moderate levels are likely to get soundly thrashed. Still, such information is excellent for higher level campaigns, and gives a games master a rich background to weave plot information into.
Of much more use for all levels is the expanded bestiary, and the selection of new "dark" classes. The Drakkarim warrior information will make basic warriors look feeble by comparison, but I was disappointed how weak the dark cultist class is. Their spell selections and special abilities will not allow them to go toe to toe against either of the two principal spell casting heroes with any realistic chance of success. In comparison, the drakkarim warrior is a fearsome opponent, one on one, for any equivalent level hero. It can only be hoped that the magical abilities of the dark cultist are expanded somewhat in the soon to be released "Magic of Magnamund" supplement.
The presentation of the book is excellent throughout, with some interesting snippets of background history thrown in. The cover art is excellent, but the internal art can be a little rough in places.
If you are looking to enhance your mid to high level games with some more focused material than simple adepts, warriors, and basic beasties, then this will be very useful. If you are just starting out, then I'd say hold off until you are more comfortable with the basics.
