Read the book before you read it to your child.

Introduce interesting (nicely illustrated) monster/animal/creature then have it explode. No, literally - "until he just burst and all that was left was some sand and a seed....".

Probably not helped by having recently read "My friend Whale" which is another booby trap book for the unwitting parent who thinks that pretty illustrations might mean a books worth reading to their child.
