Product Description

Product Description

Pot Limit Hold'em is one of the major poker variants. Over the last twenty years it has increased hugely in popularity on both sides of the Atlantic. Hold'em is a fascinating game where each player receives two hole cards to complement the five community cards. This gives great opportunities for complex play and enables the expert player to outmanoeuvre weaker opposition. The pot limit format means that big bets can appear out of nowhere and this gives opportunities for skilful players to apply pressure with bluffs and semi-bluffs. Written by a world class Hold'em player, this book offers help to those players looking to improve their understanding of this complex game.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great way to get inside the mind of a great player, 15 Dec 2005
I've now read both of Reuben's books in this series, the other one being on the subject of pot limit omaha, and my comments on this one are largely applicable to both.

This book isn't intended to be a comprehensive tutorial in the subject of hold'em, but rather an excellent way for improvers and advanced players to hone their judgment. It consists of a series of around 60 multiple-choice exercises, each one requiring the reader to determine how they would play at various stages of hypothetical hands. Reuben explains how he would play each hand, and why, and scores the answer choices on offer.

Other books may provide greater insights into poker theory, but this one will help you take what understanding you have of the game and calibrate it against real-life situations. I found it a valuable tool for bridging the gap between my knowledge of the theory and what I've learned from practical experience.

1.0 out of 5 stars Faulty, 18 Oct 2008
There are very few books on poker which you could actually damage your game by reading, but in my opinion this is one of them.

Apart from the numerous typographical errors in the text, I should point out that the author is a weak poker player, better known as a chess player. Even so, I was quite surprised at the poor quality of the advice in this book.

Even the interesting self-test format was spoiled for me by the fact that some of the "correct" answers are just plain wrong. The only consolation was that this made me feel slightly better about my poor scores.

My advice would be to avoid this book and read something instead by someone who understands the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful, 20 April 2006
By Karn9evil (England) - See all my reviews
I like playing Pot Limit Texas Holdem. It has more science and structure to it than No Limit, but allows for more expression and individuality than purely Limit Poker. This book is one of the few I've seen that looks at this type of poker and gives you examples of several situations you might find yourself in - with a good line in how much to bet and when to slow-play etc. I must admit I tended to go to the analysis immediately than do the points quiz and while I don't necessarily agree with every option recommended, the text is well-written enough for you to see Stewart's logic and allows you to judge better what you considered the best route. If Pot Limit's your game and you find the No Limit game is too all or nothing and is populated by too many maniacs trying to act out scenes from the very selected WPT scenes on TV (especially when playing on-line), then I recommend this book. Just be aware, as ever, that on-line games will normally have more callers and your raises won't necessarily reduce the field as well as the bricks and mortar games Stewart quotes from. Other than that - no issues at all! Nice seeing a Brit writing a good Poker book for once!
