5.0 out of 5 stars nostalgic fun, 15 Aug 2005
By dogbarkssome (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
In the wake of the new successful TV series the makers of Doctor Who Magazine have dusted down the old World Distributors annual format, and the result is a lovingly nostalgic package of short stories, comic strips, and slightly rubbish quizzes and behind the scenes articles. The difference with a lot of those old Doctor Who Annual's is the quality of the fiction, which this time round is very high - particularly recommended are Robert Shearman's tale of sentient rain, and Stephen Moffat's time-twisting tale of the Doctor needing to be rescued by a 12-year old girl 20 years in his future. With the addition of a wealth of excellent accompanying artwork (and for once real drawings rather than Photoshop collages) this 2006 Annual is recommended both for new fans and old fans seeking a buzz of pure nostalgia. Great fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars What a Treat!!, 26 Sep 2005
By Paul D "Paul" (Darwen, Lancashire) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The problem with the old annuals is that they were all written by the same people, and people who clearly had no idea what the TV show was about. I clearly recall reading the ones in the eighties, and recognising stories that had been ripped off from TV episodes.

This time, that is not a problem, as the people behind the Doctor Who Magazine have put this annual together; not only that, it also features stories written by people who worked on the recent TV series.

The story of the sentient rain is the standout, but all the stories really capture the characters of the Ninth Doctor and Rose, and their sheer enjoyment of what they're doing. The only downside is the rubbish quizzes, but, since they remind the reader of the old annuals, this is not really a bad thing.

In all, a marvellous way to spend a few hours.

3.0 out of 5 stars Missing Persons - where's Captain Jack?, 7 Oct 2005
By A Customer
Overall this is a good read with things of interest for fans of all ages, which can often be a difficult balance to achieve. The biggest disappointment for me as a fan of Captain Jack is that neither the character not the actor who plays him seem to warrant a mention anywhere in the entire book! OK I haven't read every word but really you would expect someone who's one of the Doctor's companions to be in it somewhere - to feature fairly prominently in fact, especially when so many of the more minor characters are there. Judging by the obvious emphasis on the early episodes of the recent series perhaps the problem is that the annual was all written and compiled before the later episodes he appeared in were complete. Still, a bit of an oversight to say the least!
