Product Description

Product Description

A truly definitive biography of one of the most influential managers in the history of British football and the first British manager, in 1967, to win the European Cup. By the time of his death at the side of a pitch in 1985 he had become a legend. He redesigned the landscape of the Scottish game as the great innovator, and successfully exported his values outside the country when European football was in the grip of an ice-age of defensive negativity. This compelling biography reappraises Stein's career and looks closely at the personality of the man whose shrewdness and cunning stamped him with greatness. The author worked his entire professional life as a contemporary of Stein and travelled the world with him. He was present at nearly all of the great triumphs associated with the Celtic and Scotland manager.

About the Author

5.0 out of 5 stars Immortal now., 20 Oct 2006
This wasn't the sycophantic elergy to Jock Stein that I feared it may have been but was a really well balanced account of the football career of one of the most influential managers the game has ever seen.
The obvious points are all there - Lisbon In '67, San Siro in '70, the complete overhaul of Celtic but there's also much more.
You don't need to be a Celtic fan to enjoy this - just a football fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars PORTRAIT OF A GREAT SCOTSMAN, 19 Aug 2008
By J. Scott (SCOTLAND) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Few Scots achieved world renown in the twentieth century; more achieved it in sport than any other field.

Jock Stein was certainly one of these and a proper biography of him has been needed.

Ken Gallacher's work barely scratched the surface of Stein's complex character and, while Bob Crampsey's was much better, it was clearly written from a distance.

Archie MacPherson's is far better.

He is particularly good on two areas that have been neglected; Stein's Protestant upbringing in Burnbank and his spell as full-time manger of Scotland.
Archie MacPherson shows that after he left Celtic, Stein was a shadow of the formidable presence of a few years before.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warts and all account of a legend....., 29 May 2009
By JUDE (IRELAND) - See all my reviews
This brilliant biography covers all areas of the great man`s life, there are numerous anecdotes, some of them very personal from the writer`s experiences with Stein. I was most interested in reading about the years from 1966 up to the sad demise of Jock and was a little wary of reading about stuff that happened well before I was born, but I needn`t have worried. Archie does a tremendous job in recreating the life of the first manager to bring the European Cup back to Britain. The behind the scenes rows, successes AND failures are all covered. I can not recommend this book too highly.
