Product Description

Review
"The challenge offered reviewers by Miles Gibson's Mr Romance is how to stir up interest without sounding like a house publicist!"

Synopsis
Charlie is woken one night to be told it's the end of the world. So what's he supposed to do about it? He can save himself by proving that he's performed one simple worthwhile act in his life. Oddly enough, that's where the story begins. Einstein is an outrageous comedy of high anxieties and low morals. A rollercoaster adventure embracing everything important, from modern art to militant mothers, from battery chickens to the Meaning of Life. And then there was the dog...

5.0 out of 5 stars Gibson writes like no other, 24 Jun 2004
By A Customer
'At midnight Einstein woke up and cracked his head against the table, spilling the peanuts over the floor.
"It's raining" Charlie said, as he watched the dog trot towards the door. "Can't you wait until the morning?"
Einstein grinned and scratched the carpet. He looked like a child's drawing of a dog: a square body and a cone for a head, his tail a dash and his nose a squiggle. His coat was white, his ears and feet black, one eye was green and one eye was yellow. He wore the cordial expression of the violently insane. He was a small mongrel with a loaded bladder.'

Gibson writes like no other. His prose is sparse but warm. He can raise a laugh with a few choice words and move you with a few more. Einstein is a story packed with vitality: the plot hurtles along and the characters burst from the pages as a carnival unfolds around a dog whose owner named him in error. It is at once tragic and comic, alarming and beguiling and, rare for a writer of such talent, it lacks utterly in pretension.

It's hard to talk about Einstein without giving too much away. I read it in one sitting, hoping that it wouldn't come to an end. If you're already a fan of Gibson's writing you'll love it - it's one of his best. If you've never read him before it's a great place to start.
