Product Description

Book Description
While attending a funeral in a rain-drenched churchyard, Detective Inspector Christy Kennedy is as surprised as anyone by what’s found in the recently-dug grave. His subsequent investigation uncovers a labyrinth of secrets, lies and deceit. All members of Kennedy’s team – especially Detective Sergeant James Irvine – find themselves personally involved and vulnerable. And is WDC Anne Coles paying as much attention to solving the case as Kennedy’s estranged lover ann rea would like?

From the Publisher
This mystery series is constantly being compared (favourably) with Colin Dexter's Inspector Morse books and with Peter Robinson's novels. A TV deal is imminent. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up There With Morse and Dalgliesh, 29 Feb 2004
I have read all of Paul Charles' Christie Kennedy novels and I can honestly say that, although some of them are exceptional, this is the best. Readers looking for car chases and shoot-outs had better look elsewhere because Paul Charle's books are meticulously researched and plotted mysteries in which the reader hopes to find out the killer's identity before Kennedy 'gets his man'. Set in my own area of Primrose Hill and Camden Town in North London, they are atmospheric and contain many real life locations. The building supposedly the home of Camden Town C.I.D. is actually where my daughters go to school! And, unlike most mystery books, there's usually a strong love interest. watch out Colin Dexter, Paul Charles is coming!

1.0 out of 5 stars not really finished?, 29 Dec 2006

As an earlier review has noted. this book is strong on a sense of place and atmosphere, and the author can clearly write. However as a detective fiction it did not work for me. Lots of storylines are not well integrated - e.g. a lot of the start of the book is devoted to a character from a previous novel (and summarises the plot of that novel, and the ending) and this leads to nowhere. People do not behave in a believable way - an exceedlingly elaborate poison is staged and the body cunningly hidden. The perpetrator nonetheless later goes on a murderous spree when faced with potential discovery instead of simply running away and remaining undetected. Someone is saved from a potentially fatal attack because someone else wakes up and thinks they are in peril. I find such plot devices unsatisfying, and I found the ending incredibly pat.
