This is a truly amazing story of survival,wonderfully well researched and written.It is part history and part personal memoir recording a remarkable event just after the Second World War.I can thoroughly recommend it as a gripping read which will appeal to a wide cross-section of readers.

A super book: with the author always in the background, never intruding into the telling of the story. The words are always interesting and the book succeeds on many levels. OK, I started with little interest in Girl Guiding and finished in the same state. But the weaving together of all the different strands of the story is brilliant: description of the incident itself, evocation of the war and post-war periods, and portrayal of all the differences over time, in space and between observers.
