4.0 out of 5 stars Good solid Dredd but a bit piecemeal, 26 May 2006
By R. B. Moore "rmoore322" (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

What we have here are several stories put together around the rather tenuous theme of 'Dredd's family'. Dredd taking the second Rico out as a cadet, Rico2 in his early days on the streets, Rico2 moving into Rowdy Yates, Rico2 taking another clone cadet out, Dredd with Vienna. So there's plenty of Dredd introspection, mortality questions, reflection on past mistakes and general ground work by the writers for the day when Dredd is finally retired or killed off. Again.

It's solid enough material, it draws in several artists and writers and gives a good blend of styles, it's as witty as ever, it's great for the average Dredd reader who might not have read the full 2000AD back catalogue - but the lack of a start/middle/end to the overall flow makes it feel a bit patchwork, a little bitty and unsatisfactory.

But even a slightly below par Dredd is still worth 4 out of 5. And a big hoorah for Rebellion for continuing to put this kind of material out there in a quality format. Long may it continue.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Who are we? WHAT are we? Machines - manufactured goods, straight off the Dredd production line", 7 May 2009
By Sam Woodward "sensei_sam" (Swansea, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Dredd's having a normal day breaking up an armed robbery when the latest Rookie he has been assigned to test turns up - a trainee Judge who is also called 'Dredd'. Cloned from the original, Dredd finds himself acting as mentor to a younger version of himself - not a son or younger brother but someone literally identical in every way except experience. As such, the rookie is keen to hear from Dredd whan happened to his clone brother, Rico - did he really go off the rails or didn't Dredd want to share the limelight?

Once the new Dredd has qualified (how could he not?), he changes his name to Rico, in honour of his predecessor. But when he is assigned to a new Sector House, how will the other Judges react to having 'one of the clan' in their midst being 'holier than thou'?

Meanwhile, Vienna, the original Rico's biological daughter gets in touch with Dredd & the aging stalwart finds himself with a familial responsibility he doesn't know how to cope with. And another Dredd clone has a serious decision to make...

The short stories in this collection centre around Dredd's 'family' - how the clones react to being manufactured in a test-tube from someone elses' DNA, and how they handle trying to measure up to their legendary elder version. Vienna is an interesting counterpoint to the cloned Judges - a natural relative, to show us how utterly weird the relationship between the clones really is.

These are interesting stories, which add new layers to Dredd himself, as well as the growing number of supporting characters. A couple of the stories are weaker than the others in my opinion but all of the artists involved are top-notch, each artistdealing with a seperate story, rather than being chopped & changed within a continuous narrative. Of all of the Rebellion reprints, this is the one I take off my shelf & re-read the most often.
