4.0 out of 5 stars Before Blade Runner there was..., 8 Feb 2005
By R. Cornell "robc68" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Before Rick Deckard, Blade Runner there was Sam Slade, Robo-Hunter. Our hero makes a living by tracking down rogue robots and making film noir style quips as he blasts them. He's blackmailed into going to the robot planet Verdus to find out what happened to all the human colonists and finds a nightmare world were everything from furniture to footware has a personality. 2000 AD has been having a car boot sale lately, selling its old junk as retro, but this delirious mix of film noir, comedy and SF deserves to see print again. The robots are hilarious: BO, the Robopoly players, Smoking Joe, Big Brain and, my favourite, Boots... There's also the meanest baby who ever piloted a space ship. It's not perfect, the callous hero is easily outshone by the wacky robots, and there are some huge plot holes (just how can a metal city catch fire?) but if you're a 2000 AD reader you may have forgotten just how imaginative, fresh and funny it is. If not, it's worth reading for the robot parliamentary debate, involving the Angry, Stupid, Very Stupid and Doubtful parties, alone.
