"Now I'm going to show you why they call me "Razors"..., 11 Jan 2005
First of all, BE WARNED, this book is a bit of a mixed bag. Although, it is one that I personally enjoyed. This book collects all the Red Razors tales, aside from two filler issues in a Dredd annual. The first story is a somewaht quirky affair, jam-packed with pop culture referances, which may be very off putting to some. Indeed, one can't help wondering what illegal substance Miller was on during some of the scenes, but it worked for me. Storywise this is more of a joyful romp, but it's a very insightful look at the way Sov-Block two works... or in some cases, doesn't. The art, while not as clean and clear as that in the second story, does a magnificent job of capturing Sov-Block 2. There's so much character in the city, and such an obvious portrayal of clashing cultures that it really does feel more than just "Mega City One in Russia". The second story is where the action kicks in. Razors loses control of his mind after an run in with his old gang leader, and goes back to his criminal ways. As I have said, in this story, the art is much sharper, and cleaner. However, I feel that it loses the feel of Sov-Block Two in the process. It could have been happening in the Meg, Brit-Cit, anywhere for all I care. I also feel that this story lost the twisted humour of the last, which was a great shame. As some of the witter moments of the first story really did make up for the instances of poor dialouge that both stories suffer from (this one especially). Still, overall, it was still and enjoyable read, and it was more than a welcome sight to see Razors getting violent. So for Elvis' sake, comrade! Pick this up!
