Product Description
In Victorian London at the height of the industrial revolution, Horatio Lyle is a former Special Constable with a passion for science and invention. He's also an occasional, but reluctant, sleuth. The truth is that he'd rather be in his lab tinkering with dangerous chemicals and odd machinery than running around the cobbled streets of London trying to track down stolen goods. But when Her Majesty's Government calls, Horatio swaps his microscope for a magnifying glass, fills his pockets with things that explode and sallies forth to unravel a mystery of a singularly extraordinary nature. Thrown together with a reformed (i.e. 'caught') pickpocket called Tess, and a rebellious (within reason) young gentleman called Thomas, Lyle and his faithful hound, Tate, find themselves pursuing an ancient Chinese plate, a conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of polite society and a dangerous enemy who may not even be human. Solving the crime will be hard enough - surviving would be a bonus...

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Look At The Eyes, 18 Feb 2006
By A Customer
After what felt like a long wait from her last book, TimeKeepers, Catherine Webb's new book's out! And it doesn't disappoint!

In Victorian London, Horatio Lyle has been pulled away from his test-tubes to find something in the name of Queen Victoria: the Fuyun Plate. But what's strange about it is that it was stolen from the Bank of England! How? So with "reformed" pickpocket Tess, a "bigwig" Thomas and his dog Tate, Horatio is on the case. But soon finds it getting strange - dead bodies, hypnotism, Green Eyes and a man who enjoys ginger biscuits. But how are all these connected to the Fuyun Plate? And will Horatio live to solve this whole case...?

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing!, 20 Jul 2006
I am a huge fan of anything victorian. And what started out as a fairly cool book set in Victorian London, with a funny inventor and a cocky girl pocket-thief ended in horrible storyline mish and unprobable "aliens" with scary eyes!

I thought this book could have had some great potential if it only had kept to the "dective" part of the story, but by mixing in supernatural forces (which I am usually a big fan of, but this was done with NO credability at all) it just didnt work!

Boring, messy and weird! The only reason I gave it 2 stars was that the start was really really good!!! But after a few chapters it's LESS than a 1 star!

*sigh*

5.0 out of 5 stars Well I never, 30 Oct 2006

Once again, Catherine Webb does an extraordinary job. Not only is The Obsidian Dagger a great sequel to The Extraordinary Adventures... but is a fun mix of elements you wouldn't normally consider.

I love the characters, I love the settings and I love that unexpected. Lyle is a brilliant detective, smart and just that little bit dark. Tess and Thomas just lift the story. And who can forget the wonderful Tate, who lets face it, is probably the most wise.

I don't want to give anything away which means i can't really describe any of the best bits... all i would say is read read and read

oh and that she writes the next one PRONTO.
