Review

'Contains boggarts, goblins, giants and a talking water rat. Great stuff.' - SFX

Product Description

Faerieland. It's like a reflection of your world ...a warped reflection. And Jack has just stumbled right into it - with a whole lot of trouble on his tail. Trolls, goblins, ogres and giants ...all after one thing. But Jack's got no clue what. He needs some allies, like now. A wizard maybe. Or a High Fairy. Someone who can do serious magic. Someone who can help him get home. Anyone. Just not a dreamy young boggart named Spiggot...The Knights of Leofwende continues with: 2. Mallmoc's Castle (July '03) and Boggart and Fen (July '04)

5.0 out of 5 stars Wyrd and wonderful, 21 Jul 2002
By M. Stone (Staffordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Spiggot, a lowly boggart, is an armourer's son. When his father completes a suit of golden armour for the King of the Fairies, he entrusts Spiggot to deliver it post haste. Thus Spiggot embarks on his journey through Liofwende, a Mediaeval Britain parallel to our own, with Kling, a large dog-sized water rat as his only companion. They are soon joined by Jack, a baffled teenager who has crashed his motorbike in Mortaland - our world - and finds himself waking up in Liofwende. (Jack is further chagrined to find himself at the bottom of the class system, further down even than the rat.) Before long, Spiggot is tempted into the armour himself to do battle with a deathless serpent. And finds the heroic life to his liking! Cue more escapades....enough miadventure in fact to fill several books.

'Spiggot's Quest' is a superb fantasy tale which is peppered with all those wonderful mythical creatures that 'once' inhabited the British Isles, brought back to life with good humour and humanity. The pace is breathless and the pages abound with magic and unforgettable imagery. I don't recall reading a fantasy like quite this, as most writers in this genre retread Tolkien's path or use Arthur's Camelot as a template. 'Spiggot's Quest' however goes back further, to the real roots of British folklore. It is an eminently readable book, a real feelgood book that places you smack bang in a Britain that sadly never was. You can almost smell the fungi and leaf litter.

It gets an unreserved recommendation from me. Read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Faeryland Adventures, 25 Sep 2006
By kehs (Hertfordshire, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This book is packed full of magical adventures. It tells about Jack , a human mortal who crashes his bike and stumbles into Faerieland. He meets a boggart and a talking rat, trolls, goblins, ogres, giants and of course, a fair maiden. He has to help the boggart to deliver a suit of armour to the Faery King and whilst doing so they have some amazing adventures. Kilworth is extremely imaginative with his story telling, and creates some very humorous moments too. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Myth and legend mixed into a fictional fantasy!, 30 April 2005
I have just finished reading this book, and I now look forward to reading the next in the series!
Spiggots Quest; by Garry Kilworth, is an excellent fictional novel for young and old! I'm writing this review under my mums name, (i'm 14) and I think Teens would love it.
Spiggot is an average boggart who works as a blacksmith with his faithful water rat 'Kling' in Liofwende. Jack is a typical teenager from England, whom accidentally crosses over into the land of the Faerie; 'Liofwende' where he meets Spiggot. They build a friendship and embark on a journey to King Cimberlin with a beautiful cart of well-crafted/useful armour. This book is full of adventure and magic. Lots of different mythical creatures are encountered, some pleasant and others evil or immoral. The nicer settings are beautiful and the darker/eviler settings are quite creepy with excellent description.
As I said i thoroughly enjoyed this book and i'm sure you will too...
