Product Description

Review
"Carole Coleman's Irish eye roams over a cultural landscape that includes Pope Michael of Kansas and the petroleum Club of Midland, Texas, and explains what makes George W. Bush tick and why 'red' America hates 'blue' America. Her insights will make you think again about where the country is heading."

Product Description
In June 2004, Carole Coleman made world headlines when she interviewed George W. Bush on live television, challenging him on the war in Iraq in a way that few journalists had done. This book begins with an account of that interview and its aftermath. But "Alleluia America!" goes beyond that, travelling deep into Bush's America, meeting many ordinary (and extraordinary) people. Along her journey, which takes her from Washington to Kansas, from Seattle to Nebraska, from Salt Lake City to Bush's Texas, from Anapolis to Alabama, Carole Coleman discovers that religion is far from a spent force, but has become the driving power that motivates people's lives, a wave that carried George W. Bush to a second term as US President. Poignant, amusing and insightful, "Alleluia America!" is never less than enthralling, and provides a rare outsider's glimpse into the heart of God's Country.

5.0 out of 5 stars God's Country or W's?, 24 Oct 2005
Carole Coleman embodies the professional journalist that veteran newsman Edward R. Murrow himself strove to be and to inspire. Segueing swiftly from Irish radio and television to its national paperback best seller list, Coleman has penned a brilliant book that helped me better understand why so many people around the world, in their search for freedom of expression and religious tolerance, continue to migrate to America. Having resided in 7 U.S. states and witnessed a lifelong parade of pandering administrations, I was awed by Carole Coleman's honest and insightful commentary about President Bush's latest faith-based political experiment. The opening lively chapter of "Alleluia America", giving an inside view of her prickly June 2004 White House interview, merely sets the scene for Coleman's U.S. tour examining the infrequently described cornucopia of religious tenets influencing American voters. Subsequent chapters, the real meat and potatoes of Coleman's fascinating travelogue, provide a well-researched and occasionally laugh-out-loud look at the beliefs and future dreams of an incredible cross-section of real red and blue Americans. Extensive use of quotes enhances the authenticity of "Alleluia America", and the book is further sustained by Coleman's refreshing candor, curiosity and humility. Having enjoyed learning so much the first time, I'm now re-reading "Alleluia America" and hope that this is just the first of Carole Coleman's challenging appraisals.

5.0 out of 5 stars "doesn't it always take the Irish to speak up ?", 4 Nov 2005
Informative and well written account of former Irish Washington correspondent Carole Coleman's interviews and travels in Bush country where she discovers that religion is a major motivator. Thoroughly recommended and suitable for all age groups.
