Product Description

Product Description

There is growing consumer concern about the conditions under which employees and communities in developing countries produce products for the UK market. This has been reflected in the increased sales of Fairtrade products and mainstream companies developing codes of conduct for their suppliers. This reader-friendly handbook addresses these concerns and provides all the information that concerned consumers need about ethical and fair trade. It empowers the shopper with both information and advice on how to buy ethically and influence company purchasing policy, where to get further information and how to campaign on these issues. While it is aimed at consumers, it also provides extensive background information for professionals working in the environmental and related fields. The majority of the book contains extensive lists of ethical products and services including: clothes, DIY, electronics, food, furniture, health and beauty, household goods, jewellery, mail order, music, shoes, sports, stationary and toys, as well as resources such as books, websites and organisations. The book contains everything needed to shop with a clear conscience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ethical Shopping - Where to Shop, What to Buy & What to Do.., 12 Sep 2003
By A Customer
An excellent book providing a list of shops where I can buy products that have not been made by children or in sweatshops. It also shows the shops who do not care about the conditions their products are made in developing countries. It also explains Fair trade and Ethical Trading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shopping Ethically, 26 Aug 2003
By A Customer
We all know of large brand oriented corporations who have blatently flaunted the fundamental human rights of their employees in the past. But these discrepencies have had little influence on the buying patterns of the majority of consumers.

This book provides a new breed of ethically discerning consumers, the ability to see which retailers are taking supply chain ethics into their everyday business strategies. An aid to making informed purchasing decisions it rates retailers by the contents of their ethical codes and retailer type.

Additionally the book provides an introduction to ethical trade issues as well as fairtrade programmes and product marks to look out for.
