'Pulp Fiction meets Wind in the Willows' ~ Jake Arnott 'The memorable feat of a quirky and engaging imagination.' - Sir Roy Strong --Jake Arnott, Author of The Long Firm and Sir Roy Strong

Highly original and beautifully written ... Each Day A Small Victory is not just a rich, sensuous, deeply humorous animal story - it is also a brilliant celebration of life, death and the whole damn thing. Country Life Magazine --Country Life Magazine

I've been reading a remarkable little book - 'Each Day a Small Victory' by Chips Hardy. It's a kind of cute animal tale with a twist - it ain't cute! Far from it. This is anthropomorphic nature red in tooth and claw, with a twist of black humour. The anti-hero of the book, Max, is a stoat whose only aim in life is to find his next meal, while avoiding becoming someone else's. In that sense, it's the most honest animal story I've ever come across, and it's a great read. Chips clearly knows his countryside very well indeed - there is plenty of detail about the various animal characters and their habits. He is a British Comedy Award winner. The book has some stunning illustration by Oscar Grillo, who has worked on Monsters Inc and Men in Black, among others. --Sporting Shooter Magazine

Meet Max. He's made a name for himself as a rabid psychopath who uses random acts of violence to instigate a campaign of terror. He feels his blood thirsty reputation is undeserved and wants to set the record straight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh-out-loud funny and well informed, 13 Sep 2007
By Jamie C (London, UK) - See all my reviews
One of the things about the countryside which many people, having moved there, are often surprised by is the brutality of the place. Things kill one another. Sometimes they go on to eat one another, on other occasions the killing is enough. Many of these creatures are fluffy and cute and this can be alarming for the newly-Barboured resident.
Chips Hardy's wonderful new book takes an unsentimental, well-observed and accurate look at the way animals behave, their basic needs and how they go about meeting them. This has been done before, often brilliantly by the likes of "BB" and others, but rarely can it have been done as funnily as this.
One reviewer called this book "Pulp Fiction meets Wind In The Willows" and I can't think of a better description. The characters are wonderfully fleshed out (literally, sometimes), and the daily, all-encompassing drive for food is king. Hardy avoids turning them into pawed, winged or bellied humans, but still provides them fullsome characters. As people, most of his characters would fit nicely into the pages of a Carl Hiaasen novel - brutal, self-obsessed, violent - but of course this is no more than the business of staying alive.
It would make a great gift for anyone who enjoys the countryside, but should really be forced on those urbanites who see wild animals as pets as yet without an owner. Brutal, bloody, laugh-out-loud on the train funny, it's a triumph of original writing and comedic acumen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jon Davies, 15 Oct 2007

I normally prefer animals on plates rather than in books but I was persuaded by a friend to read it. I loved the non-cuddly way it treated the characters, the voices they were given and the grim reality of their lives. I googled 'stoats' afterwards and it is all true!
Worth ferreting out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and unusual page-turner, 19 Sep 2007

I picked up this book to while away a few minutes one morning and was unable to put it down. The daily escapades of Max through the English countryside draw you in as he spends his days planning, plotting, scheming and preying his next meal. Chips Hardy skilfully leads the reader through a trail of creatures from sparrows Stan, Jean and Morris, hedgehogs Cliff and Harry and the crow brothers, Ray and Brian to Donna the bunny rabbit and the eternal optimist Waldo. Chips bestows on them each an apt voice, evoking a sense of instant familiarity, warmth and empathy.
This book is a funny and exciting page-turner. It is unusual and creative both in terms of plot and language. One word of advice to all you sensitive folk out there - get attached to no one!
