5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book, 9 Feb 2003
By A. Russell "MandaVoo" (London) - See all my reviews

I really loved this book. The socio-historical detail is fascinating and indispensible, providing unique insight. The telling of the story is sensitive, fastidious in it's attention to detail and suberbly balanced between rigorously researched fact and creative interpretation.

The story and characters are masterfully brought back to life. The debate between science and religion is so skillfully centred on such a poignant subject, you can't help but be moved by the eventual outcome and incensed by the indifference of those whose careers were more important to them than the life of a child, people for whom being right was far less of a concern than being proved right.

5.0 out of 5 stars You could not make it up..., 16 Aug 2009

Social history tells the best stories. Here the story of an obscure and obstinate teenage Welsh girl casts a dreadful light on the prejudices and priorities of the Welsh and English professional classes. A simple but powerfully moving short story that would make a fabulous film if treated as well as the story is handled here. Highly recommended.
