Product Description

Synopsis

For those who would share their lives with the graceful, intelligent lurcher, there has, until now, been little information on how to cope with that mysterious sighthound temperament in a domestic environment. As a result of many training enquiries received over the years, Jackie Drakeford, has written The House Lurcher for owners of pet lurchers. Through the book, the reader will learn how to live happily with their lurcher at home and in public. In particular they will learn how to establish a sound recall so that their lurcher can be exercised, with confidence, off the lead. All aspects of owning and training lurchers are covered in detail, with special attention given to those coming from rescue homes.

5.0 out of 5 stars The House Lurcher - Jackie Drakeford, 19 Nov 2003
By Ian Barnett (Norwich, Norfolk United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
For anyone considering or having just acquired a lurcher, this book covers the peculiarities of keeping this busy working breed in a domestic environment. Practical, common-sense advice on all aspects of lurcher management...whether you intend to work your dog or just want a "pet".
The chapter on feeding fascinated me and, reading the logic behind a natural diet, I took the authors advice. My pup had been reluctant to feed commercial petfoods but was hyperactive after eating them. The change of diet has transformed and calmed him. He accepted the new diet with enthusiasm.
An excellent read. Anyone who has kept lurchers will associate immediately with the traits the author describes and will find the advice within invaluable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Changed Dog!, 7 April 2006
By Miss E Edwards (Balsall Common, Coventry United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book is fantastic! The House Lurcher should be made compulsory reading for all those, like me, who have a rescue lurcher. The most revelatory chapter for me was about diet, and after following the advice about changing from processed dog food to raw meat and vegetables my dog has changed from a dead ringer for the Tasmanian Devil to a much calmer, more obedient and settled dog. The book explains the unique physiology of the lurcher and how best to communicate and train these unique animals. The opening chapters explain the evolution of the lurcher and discuss the various types of crosses and their temperaments. Above all it helps owners of 'pet' lurchers to understand how to live happily in a suburban environment with an atheletic, sensitive, keen and highly intelligent animal.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for new Lurcher owners, 19 Jun 2005
By Elaine Wrightson (Berkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent book, and an absolute must for all those who are considering a Lurcher. With dog shelters full of Lurchers seeking homes I would recommend any Manager suggests potential owners read it first, for the sake of the Lurcher! I've been a dog owner for many years, taking on puppies from a completely different type of dog. This time round I fell in love with two Lurchers seeking a new home. Lurchers ARE special dogs, they are not like any other type. Jackie 'knows' Lurchers and writes about them with warmth and affection, and much humour. You have to have a good sense of humour to own a Lurcher! As I well know! The book is full of good common sense information, and written with the dog in mind rather than the owner, which is often lacking in most dog books. This book is not just about understanding Lurchers, it is a good read for any potential dog owner of any breed, (and to be honest some parents!) Perhaps if more people read this book and understood the soul of dogs, we wouldn't have our dog shelters overflowing.
