Product Description

Synopsis

Where did the Universe come from? This is the single biggest and most difficult question that there is. From early religions through Greek Philosophy and Western Science, man has always attempted to discover the meaning of our place in the Universe. In the last twenty years, these debates have all been stood on their head by amazing discoveries, big bang theory and ideas about new sub-atomic layers. The nature of Time and Space are truly up for grabs. With a witty and accessible style, Osborne leads us on a historical and informative journey through the philosophies of the universe including the importance of telescopes, mathematics and relativity theory and ending with contemporary mind-expanding concepts such as the reversibility of time and parallel universes. Chapters include: The Beginnings of Cosmology; From Stars In Their Eyes to Telescopes and Beyond; The Newtonian Revolution: Mechanics and Maestros; The Rise of Modern Cosmology: From Here to Eternity; New Dimensions; and, Holes, Bangs and Curvature: Eternity Gets Bigger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Black holes and big bangs make easy!, 10 Jan 2004
By A Customer
Having failed miserably in chemistry and physics at school and not knowing the difference between a super string and a G-string I approached this book with a certain foreboding. However, Osborne's talent for making a complex subject accessible without patronizing his readership won me over within the first three pages. The clear and extremely witty style he established in Philosophy for Beginners is equally evident here and provides us with a sort of factual counterpart to Hitchhikers Guide to the Gallaxy. The book takes us on a historical and informative journey of the philosophies of the universe including the importance of telescopes, mathematics and relativity theory ending with contemporary mind expanding concepts such as the reversibility of time and parallel universes. A useful list of references and web sites concludes the book for those who still believe that a quark is some kind of design software. A great read for non-specialists and experts alike, not forgettiong those whose misspent youths were spent smoking behind the bikesheds!
