Product Description

Product Description

This is an amusing and irreverent memoir of keyboard legend Keith Emerson, the giant of popular music. He tells uproarious tales of life on the road with his bands The Nice and ELP; tales of the high-living lifestyles that goes with being one of the foremost rock stars in the world; and of course tales of the outrageous, keyboard-stabbing, barrier-shattering music he produced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emerson from the Inside, 13 Mar 2004
There are many books about rock stars, about their lives and antics on the road, but nothing comes close to the story told from the inside. Keith Emersons autobiography is an unputdownable account of his life from his childhood, through his musical development and through his time with the Nice and ELP. Two things stand out in this account, 1. his brutal but brave honesty about his own actions, thoughts, feelings. No amount of gossip could lay bare Keith Emerson in this manner. 2. His sense of humour as he recounts events that have happened, these are real laugh out loud incidents.
The only criticism is that Keith Emersons life since ELP is skipped over briefly in the last few pages of the book. The book should have been twice as long and gone into as much detail about the 80's and 90's, particularly as you are totally hooked on his personal life which is just as intriguing as his musical one. This is a book that other musicians from that era would do well to read and emulate. Once again Keith Emerson finds a direction to push back some more frontiers. I hope one day Keith finds the need and time to write part 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars A love of music, 11 Nov 2003
By Peter Finch (Wetherby, W,Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
I was keen to read this autobiography as Keith Emerson's music has inspired in me a life-long appreciation of jazz and classical music as well as encouraged me in my own piano studies.
In particular I was pleased to learn something of a hint of Keith's own way of approaching life and music as a person, which is especially detailed covering his earlier years. It was a pity that many later years were not included as I feel this could have quite poignantly set the context for Keith's present and future musical directions.

All in all this is an entertaining and candid account, especially for those with an interest in Keith Emerson's music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice and naughty, 19 Aug 2003
By Bjrn Are Davidsen (Norway) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book is very much a gem. Its basically a candid description of the 60's and 70's rock scene, or better said, behind the scene. Despite a few errors of memory (like who was in which bands excactly when), Keith Emerson has written an extremely amusing book, also if you're interested in what Rock Stars do after concert, which is portrayed rather honestly, whether its groupies or toilet humour.

This is the kind of book Jagger, McCartney and Bowie would never dare to write. Keith does a good job of showing that he and his fellows could compete with the punk rockers also off stage, and how much it all cost him personally.

Even if this sometimes distracts a bit from the musical memories, its something that shows how honest a person Emersom is. And there are a lot on music as well, not the least all the great stories on his meetings with e.g. Ginastera, Copland and Bernstein, not to mention Bonham and Bee Gees.
