I've read some rubbish but..., 29 Sep 2003

I was going to say that this book was by far the worst I've read on football violence/hooliganism/casual culture but changed my mind - it is the worst book I've ever read. Poorly written, factually incorrect (Chelsea Headhunters on the Kop in the early 60's!!!!), Eccles being a fully fledged casual, the Dublin Riot fairytale, going to Blackpool on the M1 but going past Villa Park etc. etc. I won't go on. The author has also for some bizarre reason used capital letters throughout to highlight certain points which I found extremely irritating. If you were thinking of buying a copy don't bother you can have mine for nothing. In short, complete and utter tosh.

An awful book. Full of tales that are not exactly truthfull and false accusations. The worst book yet on football culture from someone who is clearly looking on from a distance. Stick to Armed For The Match, Who Wants it or Hoolifan if you want to read about Chelsea, this book is just terrible.

Oh dear..........., 24 Jan 2005

As someone who is an ardent Chelsea fan and has read just about all the Hoolie books I was keen to read this offering. But I have to say, it disappoints from the start. It seems that the author has viewed his experiences through rose tinted glasses and describes events that others may question. Now I'm not a 'Top Boy' by any stretch of the imagination, but I have followed Chelsea home, away and abroad for the last 25 years, and can therefore remember many of the 'offs' that other hoolie books describe and generally get right. (Situations where Chelsea has given and received good hidings). This book however, leaves me wondering at times which Fantasy Planet the author inhabits? For those who were absent from, and yet fantasise about, terrace exploits from the past, this book will no doubt be a good read, but those in the know will raise their eyebrows and laugh. If you really want to relive what really happened you'd be better off investing in 'Armed for the match' and 'Who wants it?' for honest recollections of Chelsea's past.
