Product Description

Book Description

The idea of a gap year-taking a year off for traveling-is becoming increasingly popular with recently graduated high school or college students as well as older adults who are looking for a change of pace and scenery. This guide offers advice to would-be explorers (and their concerned parents), including practical information on everything from packing to personal safety. Be it for a couple of weeks or a couple of years, every aspect of planning a trip is discussed, from making the decision to go to selecting travel companions, saving for the trip, and choosing places to visit. Both first-time and experienced travelers will find much-needed assistance to taking the first steps on the journey of a lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars For a first time traveller, 1 Oct 2002
A very good book, full of useful but general information. This books gives many invaluable tips on traveling including safty, traveling alone, meeting people, equipment, packing, parents, saving, do's and don't, etc... and also many of 'tom's tips' which would normally be overlooked by virgin travellers.
A book for travelers by travelers... Essential.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable Gap Year companion, 14 Jan 2003

Excellent guide to all thinking of taking a gap year or backpacking around foreign climates. Written by the gap year "guru" and seasoned traveller Tom Griffiths, this book gives the essential preparation tips to all with itchy feet (and reassurance to those left behind!!).
A book based on the experience of many travellers, Before You Go provides no-nonsense tips and a good dose of humour - essential reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this "Before you Go!", 28 Nov 2003

This book is an absolutely brilliant guide on sorting out travel for your gap year or career gap. The author is well versed on his subject and it's written as if he's talking to you and telling you all you need to know. It goes into many different sections, from sorting out your visa to setting up an e-mail account to keep in contact with those back home. It also has some very amusing cartoons!!!

I bought an earlier edition of this book way back in 2000 before I went travelling and I am very pleased to see how successful it has been. Read more
