5.0 out of 5 stars Björk in coffee-table extravaganza!, 20 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Bjork (Paperback)
Anybody buying this book should not expect a Björk biography, nor especially any reference to her music. Published coincidentally with her last album Vespertine, it should better be considered an artefact, or perhaps an iconography, showing the ways in which many different and talented people have presented Björk to her eager fan-base.

The book is presented in three distinct sections, photographs, written word and finally short series of art/photography produced for Björk by people she has collaborated with previously. The photographs especially have been well selected and show dramatically how differently one person can be represented, depending on the directing artist.

It is worth noting that unlike many books produced for the pop market to simply sell more records, this book has a much more artistic feel and has benefited very much from Björk's personal involvement in it's production.

There is a genuinely high standard of production to the finished article and whilst it will appeal instantly to the Björk fandom, it should interest others, especially as an example of how far the music / art package has developed to market an individual artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent photos, but where's the biography?, 5 Sep 2001

(REAL NAME)
There really isn't much information in this book about Björk, her life, or her work. Most of the book is taken up with photographs of Björk and her friends (atleast I imagine they're her friends, otherwise I see little logic to them being there... but then again Björk isn't known for being logical, is she?) and the remainder of the book seems to be random outpourings of her consciousness. If you are Pyschoanalytically inclined (as I am) then I'm sure that this book will be of great interest, especially the recountal of her dreams on page... oh, there are no page numbers! Anyway the dream involves "trying to squeeze this huge piece of meat into this tiny hole in the wall". I did enjoy this book, although I felt more like I was secretly reading someone's thought journal (complete with surreal illustrations) than a biography. There is a very amusing conversation between Björk and (her hero) David Attenborough located... somewhere just after the middle of the book. The font of the book can also get a little annoying. If photography and psychology are not numbered amongst your interests then you probably won't think much of this book... as it was, I thoroughly enjoyed it.
