Product Description

LEICESTERSHIRE & RUTLAND LIFE, March 2005.
..." This book provides a charming insight into bygone Leicester, and a valuable record of the county's wartime experience. ..."

From the Author
I was 10 years old when WW2 broke out, but now, aged 76, I still have the clearest recollection of so many things that occurred at that time. I found that I was always being asked about WW2 and decided to put something down on paper - hence the book. In the process of writing it, I found that the more I thought back - the more I remembered, in fact an accumulative process ! The book is illustrated with several sketches that I made as events occurred, and give some indication of the sort of things that attracted the interest of a schoolboy at that time. Everyone that I know who has read it, has seemed to enjoy the book, and it is perhaps particularly appropriate that it should come at this anniversary of the end of WW2, celebrated all over the world. If difficult to find, it can be obtained from any bookshop with micro-fiche, or direct from Woodfield Publishing. I hope you enjoy it too !!

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read..., 19 Mar 2008
By C. E. Cartwright (Leicester, U.K.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is a delightful book illustrating a young teenager's life in Leicestershire, during the Second World War. The author describes how he and his family adapted and coped with the experiences of war, in a charming and entertaining memoir. As a child growing up in a middle class environment, the author describes how wartime events forced changes to their everyday life and how it shaped his young adulthood.
What I found most fascinating was the unique eyewitness account of the repatriation of tired British troops, recently returning from the retreat from Dunkirk, camping in mass on Victoria Park. There's also interesting insights into how the U.S. interacted with the locals at Bottesford. There are also contemporary drawings made by the author, reproduced in full colour as an appendix.
This book well worth reading if you're interested in how people lived and observed the wartime activities in Leicester and Leicestershire during the Second World War, or those interested in life along the London Road, along Victoria Park, and Bottesford village.
