5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book - for patients as well as for homeopaths., 21 Mar 2002
I came across The Homeopathic Conversation when it was lying on my homeopath's desk. Knowing that my interest in homeopathy went deeper than just being a patient, he offered to lend it to me. It was a real eye-opener about what goes on in a consultation.

Until then I had thought that a consultation was just about giving the best answers I could to my homeopath's questions, and adding on any information or thoughts I felt might be useful. The book made me realise that for the consultation to be most effective the patient has to see it as a relationship between him or herself and the homeopath, and should approach it in a manner which allows that relationship to develop. It is only through a growing relationship that people gain insights into each other, and since a homeopath needs such a deep insight into the patient to prescribe accurately, how could this not apply to the homeopathic consultation! It seems so obvious, but perhaps the reason I did not think about this before was because conventional Western medicine makes us programmed to being the passive recipients of treatment.

The next time I had a consultation with my homeopath there was a different dynamic between us, and I felt I was giving better and fuller information. I certainly enjoyed it more, probably because I was conscious that I was giving him more of the information he needed to treat me successfully. He said it made him want to make the book compulsory reading for all his patients!

So although the book is presumably primarily aimed at practitioners, it has much to teach patients. If I had to sum up the contents of the book, it is about the psychology of homeopathic case-taking. It is great fun to read - Dr Kaplan has made the book a personal account of how he became a homeopath and developed this "conversational" way of talking to his patients. There are some areas that us lay readers would skim over, but there are many chapters that gave me wonderful insights into homeopathy. I assume all homeopaths already know about the book - they certainly should - and I hope many patients will also read it and find out how to become 'better patients'.
